Tapioca & fish tasty combination – Make it:

Tapioca fish tasty combination, hence try to make it. Known as Kappa in Malayalam language, it was once considered as poor man’s diet. But now it has got an important place in the menu of almost all restaurants in Kerala. The famous “Tapioca and fish of Kerala”, is a delicious and nutritious combination. Truly, it is even used as a substitute for rice and curries, the staple food of Kerala.

Tapioca, Cultivation and uses.

Tapioca plants are widely cultivated in Kerala, because the climate and soil types are suitable for growth. Usually, the plant grows well in temperate warm and tropical climates. The tuber, is the edible part of the plant. It is used for making various dishes in different parts of the world.

Sago pearls are the nutritious product, made by extracting the milk out of Tapioca. People from northern parts of India use sago pearls for making dishes during festivals.

Moreover it is used for many other purposes, such as making starch, varnish etc.

Usually tapioca tuber is used in the raw form, for making dishes. Indeed, tapioca preserved in the dried form is equally good. The chips made by frying tapioca in coconut oil is a delicious snack.

Adverse effects

Furthermore some types of tapioca, are slightly bitter in taste due to the presence of certain toxins. But it can be removed by draining out the excess water in which it is boiled. Also it has the tendency to worsen hypothyroidism. Hence, it is better to reduce the intake of tapioca, by patients with thyroid disorders.

Kappa vevichathu.

Tapioca fish tasty combination – make it: I am sharing with you, the recipe for Kappa Vevichathu. Surely, a simple and tasty dish prepared with tapioca. Also it is very popular in Kerala.

Preparation and cooking time: 45 Minutes

Ingredients:

  • Tapioca peeled washed and diced into one inch pieces. ½ kg
  • Coconut ( grated ). 2 tablespoons
  • Green chilly. 2
  • Garlic. 2 cloves
  • Turmeric powder. A pinch
  • Cumin seeds ( powdered ). A pinch

For seasoning:

  • Coconut oil. 1 table spoon
  • Mustard. ½ teaspoon
  • Coconut ( grated ). 1 tablespoon
  • Curry leaves. 2 stalks

First cook the diced tapioca in water till it becomes soft. Put some salt, drain out excess water and keep aside. Meanwhile grind coarsely all other ingredients with a little water. Then and add to the boiled tapioca. Place it on a low flame for a few minutes, till it becomes dry. Finally mash the tapioca and mix well with all the ingredients.

For garnishing, heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard. Then add curry leaves, grated coconut and fry till the coconut becomes golden brown. Spread it over the prepared tapioca, and have it with spicy Kerala fish curry.

( Don’t be mislead by the colour of this fish curry. Because the Kashmiri chilly powder used for making this, is not much spicy )
